MUSC 120: History of Music I
The first of four sequential courses (MUSC 120, 121, 220, 221) covering major developments in Western music history, History of Music I offers an overview of music and its historical/cultural contexts ranging from the Middle Ages to the end of the sixteenth century. It is the goal of this course to provide students with a framework for understanding the general development of musical styles and practices in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, while examining selected compositions in greater analytical and historical depth. Music is considered in a broad context, with attention paid to its relationships with religious practice, philosophy, visual arts, literature, and popular culture.

MUSC 157A/557: Early Music Ensemble
The UBC Early Music Ensemble is a mixed instrumental/vocal group specializing in the performance of music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras. It provides students with an opportunity to approach aspects of historical repertory and performance in a practical setting. The full-year course includes concerts, weekly rehearsals, and coaching by specialists in voice, strings, winds, and keyboard instruments. Particularly featured is the Baroque Orchestra Mentorship Programme, directed by Alexander Weimann, the result of a collaborative initiative between UBC, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and Early Music Vancouver. MUSC 352: Medieval Music
Music 352 offers a survey of the music of the Medieval era, beginning with earliest notated sources for Western plainchant in the ninth century and concluding with the ars subtilior of the late fourteenth century. Sacred, secular, and instrumental repertories will be considered. While the course will present a broad framework for understanding the music of the era, it will also examine selected compositions in greater depth.

MUSC 353: Renaissance Music
Music 353 offers a survey of the music of the Renaissance era, covering roughly the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Sacred, secular, and instrumental repertories are considered. While the course presents a broad framework for understanding the music of the era, it also examines selected compositions in greater depth.

MUSC 354: Baroque Music
Music 354 offers a survey of the music of the Baroque era, covering the period 1600–1750. Sacred, secular, and instrumental repertories are considered. While the course presents a broad framework for understanding the music of the era, it also examines selected compositions in greater depth.

MUSC 520A: Introduction to Music Research
In Music 520 students are familiarized with the Music Library and with the most important research resources for musical topics, both in print and online. The course gives students necessary skills in the critical assessment of both primary and secondary literature, and culminates in a research paper, drafted and written under the instructor's guidance. The issues discussed in the course range from citation methods to broader intellectual questions concerning scholarly authority, the reliability of online resources, and historiographical trends.
Music 520 is offered yearly, and is required of all entering students in the M.Mus., M.A., and D.M.A. programs. This requirement may be waived if the student has had a similar course previously; please consult the Graduate Advisor.
